I hate to see so many tourists who get over charged or even kidnapped in the taxis that run on the surface streets. I lived in Mexico City as a study abroad student and have learned to love the subway. Its the best way to connect with the people of Mexico and see how life really is. It will also take you right to most destinations and you will not have to walk outside far to see the tourist attraction. Be careful around 5pm on the weekdays because it gets so congested, other passengers will actually push people into the cars. I got my foot stuck once too! It is relatively safe as long as you are conscious to your personal belongings and your wallet. The picture shows the old orange cars but they are upgrading to new cars which have the seats inside in a long along the side of the train car. I was told but am not sure that here is a separate set of police which patrol the subway. I have never had a compromising situation in the subway. On a historical note, the subway was one of the very few things that survived the earthquate of 85 in its entirety. Ironically, this is one of the places I felt safest in the city.
