Hasankeyf, Batman

Go hiking!

The town is nothing to speak of, but the ruined bridge and cliff houses are very cool. There’s a gravel road that you can follow to see some spectacular scenery and scramble around old dwellings carved into the rock. Just be careful if you’re using public transport, because the last dolmuş was full and we had to spend the night in a truly awful motel.

Side, Turkey

Pretty but touristy

Side is a bit of a tourist trap, one of the only places I went on the coast that was still crowded with foreigners in February. It’s worth a trip, though, for the pretty harbor and ruins on the beach – such a perfect setting.

Mardin, Turkey

Mardin is STUNNING

Just absolutely stunning. You can see all the way to Syria, or at least feel like you can. The architecture and the steep, crooked streets, the painted doorways, the donkeys – I only spent a day there, but it was my birthday and I loved it.
