Plaza Mayor, Madrid
Untitled
When I visited Plaza Mayor in 1996, one of my favorite things was a small cafe that served lemons that had been hollowed out and filled with lemon ice – a tart, refreshing treat in the middle of a steamy Spanish afternoon.
The last time I visited, in 2003, I made sure to visit the Plaza again on a search for the cafe. One afternoon, my grandmother and I were enjoying the frozen lemons and some carbonated water when a trio of flutists began playing in the middle of the Plaza. I decided to walk over and see if I could sit in with them. Luckily, one of them graciously handed me his flute and let me play with the others for about thirty minutes. What an amazing experience! I was a bit hesitant about asking, but I’m so glad that I did. I’ll always remember the heft of the stranger’s flute in my hands, the way the pages of music blew in the breeze and the applause when I finished.
