Plaza Mayor, Madrid

Untitled

When I visited Plaza Mayor in 1996, one of my favorite things was a small cafe that served lemons that had been hollowed out and filled with lemon ice – a tart, refreshing treat in the middle of a steamy Spanish afternoon.

The last time I visited, in 2003, I made sure to visit the Plaza again on a search for the cafe. One afternoon, my grandmother and I were enjoying the frozen lemons and some carbonated water when a trio of flutists began playing in the middle of the Plaza. I decided to walk over and see if I could sit in with them. Luckily, one of them graciously handed me his flute and let me play with the others for about thirty minutes. What an amazing experience! I was a bit hesitant about asking, but I’m so glad that I did. I’ll always remember the heft of the stranger’s flute in my hands, the way the pages of music blew in the breeze and the applause when I finished.

Madrid, Comunidad De Madrid

Untitled

Truly phenomenal – Madrid is one of my favorite places. The number of museums in this city astounds me, as does the number of tiny, unique shops that you can explore.

The city that houses Guernica will always have a special place in my heart.

Dallas, Dallas County

Untitled

I’ve lived here for about five years now. One of the radio stations jokes about the “cocaine and boob job crowd”, which is truly how much of Dallas looks on the surface. However, if you dig a little deeper, there is beautiful art, fantastic music and lovely scenery here.
