There doesn’t seem to be much to see in Fort Payne itself, but the scenic routes to the East are stunning. I stayed in a cheap hotel in the town and drove slowly back towards Atlanta and my flight home, using the back roads and scenic routes. Wonderful.

I wouldn’t go again, but I’m glad I went once. The French Quarter is sleazy and frightening, full of “barely legal” strip joints and the streets are paved with drunks. There’s some good jazz to be heard if you search a little. A ride on a street car is essential. Don’t go into the French quarter after dark.

I drove the southern half from Jackson to Natchez in June 2008. It was one of the best drives of my life. Next time, I will drive the whole length of the parkway and stay longer at each place along the way.

I only stayed on night, my itinerary didn’t allow for longer. I would definitely visit again and stay longer.

It’s a lovely town, wonderful buildings, good hotels and B&B and excellent food. Beware the well off locals who can remember the civil war like it was yesterday.

I visited Graceland on my Deep South road trip. The mansion is fascinating, well worth the visit. Avoid the photographers and shops across the road, though. They are only after (a lot of) your money.

I stayed one night, passing through on my Deep South road trip. The main street is a tourist trap. I heard too late that the best music is to be heard away from the centre, so if you’re going for the country music, do your research first.

My plane landed here from the UK at the start of my Deep South road trip. I stayed one night in a crappy hotel, picked up my car and left. It’s an awful place, a huge ugly city. No doubt there are places to visit here, but I just wanted to hit the road.

I only stopped for one day—I was on my first tour of the Deep South. I didn’t know which places I would like, so planned to stay one day at each location. This is one place I would visit again and stay longer. Many opportunities to listen to great blues music and eat good food.

I’d like to live somewhere overseas in the next year or so. Sweden is at the top of my list at the moment. I’ve never even visited Sweden yet. Perhaps this summer…

This is the most wild and remote place I have been. Nowhere else I have visited can you be so genuinely far from civilisation. If you hiked or canoed through here, you could go for days without seeing another soul. You could also get killed by a bear, so make sure you follow the park authority’s advice.
