The Interislander Terminal, Wellington

A really pretty ferry ride

Well, the terminal itself isn’t that exciting obviously, but the Interislander ferry ride is really scenic and pretty. The ferries themselves are really crowded and serve terrible food, but the views of both islands can more than compensate.

On days with bad weather you won’t see anything and will probably end up really sea sick, so make sure you pick a sunny day!

Picton, Marlborough

I’ve been there a few times on my way between the islands (you’ve got to go through Picton to catch the interislander ferry), and stayed the night there once at a campground. It’s not a bad place, but I wouldn’t bother going there again if it wasn’t the ferry port. The harbour isn’t that pretty compared to lots of places in NZ, there’s not really any great scenery, and nothing very exciting to see or do in the town itself.

Takaka is an awesome holiday destination if you’re a rock climber. Great weather, friendly folks, good food, a river to swim in, and some of the best climbing in the country.
