Jumpin' Jay's Fish Cafe, Portsmouth

Slow service, excellent food

On a busy Friday night we scored a walk in table but there was a significant wait for drinks, bread and placing an order and huge lags between courses. However, we had a great seat and the food was wonderful.

They bring slices of crusty sourdough that is soft and chewy in the middle along with whole cloves of roasted garlic and butter – so good. For a starter we had the raw bar sampler that comes with 4 oysters, little necks, mussels, scallops, crab claws and 2 huge shrimp along with citrus crab salad and an incredible Asian flavored calamari salad. I will go back for that alone.

Next we shared a chopped radicchio salad that had blue cheese, cranberries and pumpkin seeds and was served with a warm roasted pear that was stuffed with blue cheese. A perfect combination of hot and cold, sweet and sour, soft and crunchy…

Our entree was also shared – the waiter recommended halibut piccata. The fish was lightly breaded and delicious, served over mashed potatoes with roasted cauliflower and broccolini. The sauce was a sort of lemony beurre blanc. It was very good and a great size for sharing.

3 dishes and no drinks came out to over $50 do it is not inexpensive but worth it.

Solo Bistro, Bath

Interesting menu, great atmosphere

We were shopping in Portland when on a whim we decided to drive to Bath and explore the cute little downtown shopping area. The menu at Solo Bistro caught our attention and we went to the downstairs bar for a snack of duck wings in soy and Harissa – sweet and hit and sticky and wonderful. We also had some citrus marinated olives and salt cod fritters. Everything was beautiful and delicious. Service was friendly and attentive and the place has a great vibe.
