I went on safari in 2002; my friends and I had a few days left before coming back to the States and not enough money to get to Zanzibar. We asked the locals to recommend a beach and ended up on a bus to Tanga. This was one of the best parts of our trip! I highly recommend it for both relaxation and a chance to meet many interesting people. You need to pay membership to a “beach club” to have beach access; we went to the most expensive club which was $2 for the day and met many expatriates from a variety of countries who’d relocated to Tanzania. The beach and water were great too.
