Ladygma

In 1958 my father was in the Army and was stationed at Orleons, France. I was a very, very young girl at the time. We lived in France for almost 2 years, there are a lot of things that I remember about our stay there. I guess the most pleasant memory was of the delicious fresh from the oven (there was a bakery 2 doors down from us) hot french bread and big chuncks of yummy chocolate. My mom would have me run down to the bakery to buy a loaf of still hot french bread, stop off at the little store (next to the bakery) buy a thick bar of dark chocolate, then bring it all home for a Saturday morning breakfast treat. She would break the chocolate into small pieces, then put the chocolate pieces between two slices of (still very warm) bread, and let the chocolate melt on the bread. That might not sound appealing to some people, but that was in the day when foods were cooked and baked naturally, no perservatives or additives. Ah, the aroma of freshly baked bread and the sweet smell of real chocolate still lingers in my mind…and what a treat for a little kid.
