Lily Garden Café

Worth visiting!

News about this place

It’s changed its name from “The Espresso Garden” to the “Lily Garden Café.” Don’t know if it was an ownership change, just a name change, or what.

San Diego International Airport

WiFi!

The formerly pay-for-play WiFi access is now free WiFi access. You will need a JavaScript-capable browser to get on it, though. (Lord knows it just wouldn’t do to let people jump right onto a public network without making them wade through a ToS agreement.)

Mystic Mocha

Worth visiting!

Mystic Mocha's 25(?) mochas

Now you can track your progress through Mystic Mocha’s mocha menu at Lists of Bests.

(I’m pretty sure their menu is numbered from 1 to 25, but apparently I missed one when I took down the names of all of the items. Feel free to add it if you figure it out.)

Agua Azul la Villa

Worth visiting!

Untitled

There are cheaper places to stay in Huatulco, but I don’t think any of them would make me feel as much at home as my wife and I did when we stayed here on our honeymoon. Highly recommended for first-timers to Mexico.

PC's Bahías

Untitled

La Crucetita is a city of about 10,000, yet it is dead easy to find shops for sitting down and accessing the Internet. I am at one of them as I write this. The cost: 10 pesos (approximately US$0.90) per hour. Every similar place I know of in the States that provides its own PCs and isn’t a public library charges at least five times that much.

Gelato Vero Caffè

A tip I have about this place

It is easy for a first-timer to get confused by Gelato Vero’s layout. It has two floors; the open-air patio is on the upper floor. It’s confusing because the two floors are disjoint from one another, so when you buy your coffee, you have to walk out of the ground-floor cafe, around the east side of the building, and up the outdoor stairway to get to the upper patio. This is important for geeks who want to use the Wi-Fi!

Benton County Courthouse

Worth visiting!

Why I recommend this place to visitors

New York City has the Empire State Building, Paris has the Eiffel Tower… and Corvallis has the Benton County Courthouse. It is the city’s visual identity.

Twiggs Bakery & Coffeehouse

News about this place

Twiggs now has a comedy night on Saturday nights in their “green room” venue next door to their café.

Santa María Huatulco

¿Cuál Huatulco?

There are 2 Huatulcos in Oaxaca. Santa María Huatulco is the home to local residents who were displaced by the build-up of the tourist area Bahía de Huatulco.

See info on Santa María Huatulco by Tom Penick.

Caffe Calabria

News about this place

A public notice posted in the window indicates a pending change of ownership here. It looks like they want to make it a pizzeria. It’s not clear whether they intend to keep the café aspect of it. It looks like 40% or so of their chalkboard menu has been erased, including their breakfast menu. But all of the coffee drinks and most of the other beverages are still up there, as well as a short panini menu.
