I grew up in Houston and I loved it (if you stay in the central area). The best parts about Houston are difficult for a visitor to find without guidance:
It is a foodie’s heaven. Superb restaurants, of the local chain and non-chain variety. Suberb supermarkets – Central Market and Whole Foods Market. Central Market is worth visiting even if you don’t live in Houston.
For cheap try Goode & Co. Taqueria, or Goode & Co. BBQ across the street. Also try Amy’s Ice Cream and the 59 Diner on Greenbriar.
For mid-high price, try Antica Osteria near the Rice Village (traditional Italian – perfect), Prego in the Rice Village, El Tiempo (upscale Mexican), or Tony Mandola’s Gulf Coast Kitchen in River Oaks.
For a more upscale affair, try Aries, Da Marco (authentic upscale italian with extremely attentive staff), or Mockingbird Cafe (Traditional American / French with subtle latin flair)
The Montrose area is very artsy and full of left-wing culture plus great antique shops and cafes.
Downtown boasts a world-class theater district, including the top name Houston Grande Opera. There are also historic hotels and new hotels in the old world style. (I recommend the Magnolia).
