Spent a week traveling through Greece the summer before the Olympics. The weather was surprisingly cool (it was early June), Athens was overly crowded, but the rest of the country was delightful in every possible way, especially for one who loves ancient history.
If I were to go back, I would take longer than a week. The Acropolis was every bit as awe inspiring as one might imagine, but the history museum was closed for the Olympics and I would love to see it.
Mycenae is not to be missed in the southern peninsula and you pass by the archaeological site of Corinth to get there. Make sure to stop on the Isthmus Canal.
Meteora (not certain of the spelling) on the plains of Thessaly are an eye popping wonder. These great rocks rise up a thousand feet into the air—one of the James Bond movies captured the wonder while conveniently blocking the set of stairs leading up to the peak.
