Harajuku

Worth visiting!

A review of this place: Too many wannabe photographers!

I’m a foreigner myself, so I’m not anti-foreigner here. The first time I went to Harajuku station, it was pretty cool. I went to the bridge, saw the kids, took some pics, the usual. After going back a few more times, like for the cherry blossom festivals, it got really old with all the westerners trying to take pictures. You can’t even walk across the bridge, or take a photo, without being surrounded by a hundred guys who think they’re professional photographers because they bought a $1,000 camera and shop at a second-hand store. Maybe I’m just easily annoyed, but Harajuku station definitely seems like a place for those who try to avoid the “mainstream” to go and be and grow a little more pretentious. Don’t let that discourage you of course. It’s a great place to add to your 43 places!

Weird.

Maybe it’s because I only took the Sailor’s tour, but all the Korean-looking girls I met were actually Russian, and couldn’t speak a lick of Korean. It was so strange.

Guam

A review of this place: Love It!

My ship pulled in recently for a port call, and I fell in love with Guam. The island is small, but it’s just so nice. Very sunny and hot, awesome people, tons of Bob Marley everywhere. We stayed for four days, and it was definitely a great time. I went para-sailing, jet-skiing, kayaking, went to two lover’s point. It was just great. I hope to one day get orders there.

There Now...

I’m here now actually. it’s my first time and all I can say is it’s almost surreal. You walk into a bar at night and it’s like a horse and cattle auction. Sad young looking girls just shuffling back and forth for all the old and disgusting brits and europeans looking for sex. I met some bar girls and their stories really are sad. Some people say these girls choose to do this stuff, but I guess when you live in a place where sex tourism is the only income, you have no other choice. The people are nice, although I seem to feel like everyone is bullshitting me at every opportunity. Aside from the sleaze, the nightlife is great. I’m mixed on it all, but I still generally like the place.

Just got here...

This place is really different than I thought. It’s very western, and mostly everyone speaks English. The night life is crazy, and the people are beautiful. I went and saw the Crazy Horse of Paris cabaret and it was amazing. During the day it’s really hot, but cools to a perfect temperature later in the day. I spent most of my time around Orchard and Newton. I ended up getting a hotel in Gheylang because it was cheap. I suggest everyone spend a little more money and get a hotel anywhere else but there. If you’re visiting, do the bungee and check out the visitor center on Orchard. You can’t miss it.

Here Now.

I’m currently stationed here, with the Navy, for the next two years. It’s not much really, but an alright place if you’re new to Japan. Just avoid the Honch!

Harajuku Station

I went to Harajuku Station in Japan in hopes of seeing the trendy teens. Unfortunately, it wasn’t as wild as I hoped, but I’m going back Sunday for another shot.

Puerto Rico

Visited

I was there for about a week with the US Navy. We were helping the base close due to the controversy over the Vieques bombing site. The weather was great, and it was the first time I had ever seen clear water. It was also the first time I swam in the ocean. The beaches were sandy white. The plant life is just beautiful. The gnats on the other hand are an annoyance. We went to some local areas, like Liquillo, and had dinner and went to some of the clubs. The clubs were very strange. They would play a mix of Latino and American music. When the American music came on, they all left the dance floor. It felt a little uncomfortable. We visited San Juan and saw all the cruise ships pulling in. We got some nice trinkets to take back home. Overall it’s a nice place, but I would suggest going to San Juan over anywhere else.

Bahrain

Loved Bahrain

Was stationed there with the US Navy. The temperature is probably the most noticable characteristic. It was common for daily temps to reach 120+ degrees. A lot of the island is under development, so you’ll see a lot of construction in some parts. In others, you’ll see beautiful architecture and lavish plant life. F1 is HUGE in Bahrain, and they have a nice track that hosts races quite often. All the hotels are at least 4 stars, some being 5. A night might run around 30 BD (Bahraini Dinar), about $80. Everything, even the Burger King, delivers, and tips go a long way. You can get anywhere on the island via cab for a flat price. This price, like almost anything else for sale, is negotiable. The population is a mix of different cultures. A lot of Saudis and other arabs travel to Bahrain on the weekends. Ethiopians, Asians, and Indians are all common peoples, mostly in the labor or hospitality fields. All in all, it’s a nice place, great people, great sights, and wonderful souvenirs. I hope to go back soon. Pic is from my hotel room, the rest of the country is much nicer.
