Okay… so I went this summer, by myself, to India (Dehli, Bangalore, Cochin, Coorg/Kerala, Mumbair)… and I have to tell you— it was the most amazing place… but BEWARE the culture shock! As I said- I’m blonde/blue-eyed and I was traveling alone (for part of the trip), and i’m a near 6 foot lady. Could I have stuck out any more? Probably not.
Women— dress respectfully, don’t go alone (just for the loniliness factor), wear faux-wedding rings, don’t make too much eye contact, relax, and know that: when in markets… they WILL charge you like 10X more than it costs for locals. And also: YOUWILL BE STARED AT.
It’s a fantastic place, just make sure you know exactly what you’re in for (even then, you’ll still find yourself naive). Get Travel Planet’s guide to India. DO NOTTAKETAXIS. Auto rickshaws if you must (only because you can leap out— there aren’t any doors). Always hire a car through your hotel. Safety, safety, safety.
Everyone is lovely once they meet you— just be aware of your situation at all times.
You’ll have a GREAT time as long as you are prepared.
