John's Lunch, Dartmouth

The best seafood indeed

Okay, some people say that deep frying fish ruins it. If you’re one of those, you might as well leave now. If not, then run to John’s Lunch. The seafood is expertly battered and fried and an absolute joy to eat. The clams in particular are divine – as big as a baby’s fist and oh so juicy. Personally I like the “combo” platter – clams, haddock tips, and chips. When I get this, my wife will ask for just a plate of clams (not on the menu boards), and we have quite a feed. The prices are not particularly low, but I figure that’s what they have to do to keep the traffic down – it’s not a big place, so you should be prepared to wait if you’re going ‘round lunchtime. Takeout is an option, but like most foods intended to be eaten hot and crispy, it degrades every second it’s in the (very well packed) takeaway bag.

If you’re visiting Dartmouth, or are a native Haligonian, be sure to stop by.

Rock And Sole Plaice, Leicester Square

Untitled

Plentiful food, and pretty good. I ordered the “Rock and Chips”, and really liked the taste of the rock, but found it a little too soft for my liking. My wife’s “Cod and Chips” was really good, though. The meals were blisteringly hot when they arrived, possibly because they had to fry mine up special, since it wasn’t selling like the more traditional cod. The batter was different than I’ve ever had – quite hard, really, but still good. Yummy ketchup and tartar sauce in tiny pots on the table.
