Belfast, County Antrim

Friendly Belfast

I have lived there and the people are what make the place – they are so friendly and hospitable.

Take the open top bus tour up the Shankill and down the Falls to get some idea of the recent history of the place. When you think about the shit that ordinary Belfast people, Catholic or Protestant, put up with for thirty-odd years it’s amazing they still have a sense of humour. Perhaps that’s why.

The M club (next to Benedicts) is very good. Just steer clear of politics and religion and you will have a great time.

Birmingham, West Midlands

Metamorphosis of a great city

Brum was pretty grim when I was growing up there. Nowadays it has changed into a vibrant place with a real European feel.

Lots of good places to eat and drink, very friendly locals and a good museum and art gallery. Great night life on Broad Street.

Two Premier League football teams (at the moment – three if you count West Brom!)

Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam-Centrum

Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam

Great, but not as good as I had built it up to be. Big queue to get in (like every museum in Amsterdam). Quite expensive and no discounts for groups or students.

The works are simply fantastic. I personally prefer his later stuff, especially from 1890, the last year of his life. Wonderful colours, incredible technique.

I found out a lot of things I didn’t know about Vincent whilst visiting here. Really good research facilities available.

Building itself is pretty grim, won’t win any architectural awards.
