Samarkand and Bukhara are interesting spots (but limited, you can see them in a day), and the Ferghana valley is picturesque, but otherwise there isn’t much to recommend.

I was a Peace Corps Volunteer here from 1999-2001 & was back in the summer of 2002. I lived outside of the small city of Yongchuan, near Chongqing. I would have to say that the major sites of Beijing are a must see (Great Wall – steeper than it looks! Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, etc), though I have heard mixed reviews about Xian and the terra cotta warriors. I will have to say that the absolute best place I visited in China was Tibet – Lhasa’s old town is awesome and to visit the Buddhist temples there is like stepping back in time.
p.s. the picture of the huge buddha posted by someone today sits overlooking the river in the town of Leshan, Sichuan Provence.
