How this place changed my life
I wrote a play here.

The Duck will be worth visiting soon. It’s just been bought in a joint move by Greenstage and Absurd Reality Theatre (the latter was recently voted Best Theater Company in Seattle in the People’s Choice poll of the Times). Watch this space.

OMG, El Diablo. Get it. Love it. Also, they have these little balls of herbed goat cheese that my best friend and I have dubbed Orgasm Cheese. Cause, well, you know. Tango tends to be the birthday restaurant of choice for my girl and me. Trust your server here, but don’t expect to get out under a hundred dollars here if you’re foodies like we are. Definitely an infrequent treat.

A little expensive for what they’re making, I go back because Dave Nakamura is such a nice guy. He’s always walking up and down the street and is always in a great mood. Frankly, that’s a big sell for me.

The best time to visit is on a crisp autumn day, preferably a weekday. It’s less busy then. You can spend weeks exploring all the little corners. Trust me, I know.

Bar none. Second best for clothes is Backstage Thrift, or that place (I forget the name…) by HippoSchemes for odd knick-knacks and jewelry.

Well, I work at the joint. What can I say? It’s a dingy, ghost-infested, aging place with a dysfunctional family for staff (which I am proudly part of!). It’s also been the most welcoming, nurturing educational experience of my life, both as a student and as an employee. It’s a queer home to lost theater companies and lost souls. Stop by sometime and I’ll give you the tour.

NYC spoiled me. Everything you need is within 5 blocks and culture is 24 hours. I love Seattle (it is my hometown, after all), and NYC has it’s drawbacks, but Cap Hill is the closest thing I’ve got to a synthesis. Here I am, 11th and John, and I can get to anything most hours of the day. I can walk to work - one of this town’s many fringe theaters - and I feel much more connected here than I would most other places in the city. That’s important to me, the disconnect queen. It makes life more worth living when I feel close to things.
