I spent nearly a month in Sydney in July of 2005, the most time I’ve ever spent out of the country. It’s a beautiful place. Sydney in a way really reminds me of home, of Seattle. It made me homesick at times. But if you get out of the city, there is nothing that could seem more different. The plants, the animals, it almost seems like a prehistoric world. Highlights of the trip were the two times out on Sydney Harbour, once in a fancy sailboat with my uncle’s business associates, and the other in a very old fishing boat with a friend of my aunt’s, the Blue Mountains and Jenolan Caves and visiting a friend of my aunt’s from South Africa who now lives a ways away from Sydney. She had a beautiful home, with orange trees. I ate an orange while sitting in the hammock on the porch, listening to a kookaburra across the field and it was wonderful.
