Last time I was in England was a flying weekend visit to meet up with friends from the internet. We stationed ourselves in a bar in Leicester Square and each drank seventy quid’s worth of booze in an afternoon; we squeezed ourselves into a tiny cinema with no leg-room; we stayed in a very dodgy B&B in Clapham where the floor had such a slant to it we thought we were going to wake up pinned against the far wall.

One of the most beautiful things about Australia is that it has a bit of everything. Desert, rainforest, tropical islands, snowfields, cold forests – the lot. The cost of living is low, foreign currency goes a long way, the locals are relaxed – if, regrettably, sometimes xenophobic – and the country has pleasant cities and beautiful not-cities.
