In bigger cities, namely Paris, a lot do speak English, but like Boog says, they don’t like to. So if you need to speak to someone, always, ALWAYS say “bonjour, parles vous Engle?” (Hello, do you speak English?) And always end your conversation with “merci” (thank you). If you do, they’re more likely to help you. And as stated before, do make an effort to learn a little French, if not for conversation, at least for navigation.
