São Paulo is huge, friendly, scary, dirty, frenzied, overpopulated, culturally diverse, exciting, nerve-racking, and lots of other big city words. What it isn’t is pretty. Surrounded by mountains that hold in the smog it came be an overwhelming place to wander around in. I lived there in a much safer era (late 1970s) and the last time I was there (1999) it felt like a much more dangerous place. The museums and galleries are wonderful as is availability of a wide range of music. It’s worth a few days of exploring if you are going to be in Brazil for an extended period of time, but if you only have a short trip planned, skip it.
