Main island of the former colonies of the Netherlands; this island has history, culture, beaches, shopping and friendly people. Not to mention a nice mini-mountain, nice sailing and great scuba diving.

Every area has its charms. The people are a bit difficult to warm up to, but they mean well.

For breakfast, try to find a “Pain quotidien”. It’s where the locals go too!

Guinness just doesn’t taste the same anywhere else!

Just don’t get too stuck on the Fado. It’s depressing!

Do as the locals do: eat 6 meals a day. Start with breakfast of toast and jam, then break at around 10:30 with a coffee and pastry. Lunch is warm, 3 courses, consider fish, so it’s not too heavy. Then comes a sweet snack with tea in the afternoon, or if you don’t have to work, here’s where a little liquer is not out of place. Tapas start after 6pm, and dinner not until 10pm. If you’re out late, the thing to do is to have ‘churros’ with melted chocolate. Who really cares about cholesterol?

Take the train, not a car. Safer for all of you used to driving on the right side of the road too!

Consider Hamburg – very artsy and walkable city, off the beaten track!
