Brussels

Worth visiting!

A nice stop between Amsterdam and Paris

When I was there, it seemed like a ghost town. Maybe it was Sunday. Nice buildings though, and certainly an important city.

Tanglewood

Worth visiting!

A genteel environs for music connoisseurs

Great venue, scenery, people and music. Leonard Bernstein performed there quite regularly. Bring a picnic lunch and blanket!

Newport

Worth visiting!

America's most opulent seacoast community

Granted, I have not been to all of America’s seacoast towns and cities, but it is hard to imagine anything could come close to Newport’s peninsula…where the Dukes, Vanderbilts and that layer of uppitiness had homes. Best to see by boat, as the homes face the water. There is, however, a road through the peninsula.

The town is also quite pleasant.

Beverly Hills

Worth visiting!

Bring lots of money!

In 1987, I purchased a cashmere robe on Rodeo Drive. 900 bucks.
Ah to have that kind of wherewithal today!
Thank God for Goodwill!

Bar Harbor

Worth visiting!

Where the rich played

Once upon a time, Bar Harbor was where many of the rich and richer found solace from the clang and bang of city life. Many of the “cottages” of the rich were destroyed in fires and with age, but the town still, as far as I know, attracts visitors from all sides of the economic spectrum.

One can hardly find a better place, on the east coast, to spend the hot months of summer. The entire Mt. Desert island park is breathtaking, as are the surrounding bays. Many famous writers and historians have lived, and still live, in this beautiful part of the country.

Ogunquit

Worth visiting!

Close to Boston

There is a lot going for Ogunquit. It is a charming artist colony with good eats, great views, pretty people, and proximity to people. Bar Harbor is great, but will take most people more time than they may be willing to take on a regular basis.

Neighborhood Theater

Worth visiting!

I saw Robert Fripp and Strawbs there.

Excellent programming for this ex-x-rated theater in the heart of artsy NODA.

Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

Worth visiting!

A museum within a museum

Everything about the Gardner home and museum is art. There are ancient tiles embedded in the walls, medieval gargoyles, foreign fountains, and floor after floor of Brahmin opulence.
There is also a Rembrandt room, with Mrs. Gardner’s private collection of Rembrandts. But that is just one room. Every room is itself a wonder to behold and enjoy.

Do not visit the Museum of Fine Arts without walking around the corner and checking out this superior home for superior art.

Chauncey Gardner would feel right at home!

Walden Pond

Worth visiting!

Read Thoreau then come here

Perhaps the most important pond in American history, Walden Pond is a metaphor as much as a reality…which has actually succumbed somewhat to modernity. It is still worth visiting, circumnavigating, splashing in, and reading more about.
It is amazingly close to Boston and Cambridge. 12 miles away, as I recall.

Don’t miss the other literary sites, graves, homes and such in the Concord/Lexington area.

DeCordova Museum & Sculpture Park

Worth visiting!

A magical castle and sculpture garden

One of the best getaways for studious Cantabrigians, one may even stumble, as I did, upon a free concert in the woods, featuring Chick Corea and Gary Burton.

All American sculptors should put this on their itenerary.
