Michigan

Autumn.

s_10_jenn advised me to visit Northern Michigan in mid October. According to her the autumn is so beautiful there; it will leave a lasting impression. I can’t go this October but who knows…. Maybe next year!

Hadrian's Wall

Hike the National trail.

The signposted trail is 84 miles (135 kilometres) long, stretching from coast to coast, from the site of the Roman fort at Segedunum at Wallsend on Tyneside to Bowness-on-Solway on the Cumbrian coast. They say it passes through some of the most beautiful parts of England. I have to see that with my own eyes :)

Kirkenes

Make an 11 day roundtrip with the Hurtigruten between Bergen en Kirkenes.

Years ago I came across an article about the Hurtigruten. The Hurtigruten is the name of a Norwegian coastal transport service which is over a hundred years old. Originally the Hurtigruten played an important role providing the Norwegain coast with a reliable transport service for mail, goods an people. Nowadays the Hurtigruten is recognised as one of the “world’s most beautiful sea voyage”. The journey starts in Bergen and takes passengers all the way up to Kirkenes and then back again, stopping at all 34 large and small ports of call along the route during waking hours. There is also time for excursions. I think it’s the best way to see the Norwegian coastal region.

Harlingen

Spend the night in the Harlingen Lighthouse.

In 1998 the light in the Harlingen Lighthouse extinguished. For a moment the future of this landmark was uncertain. One individual however used it to fulfill a dream and created a unique place where I want to spend at least one night :)

Vermont

Let me just once ….

See the jewels in the crown. Vermont in the fall! I want to see the reds, the yellows, the burnt orange and the splashes of pink. I love maples. Oh and of course, as a former addict, I would like to visit the Ben & Jerry Factory. :)

Chioggia

(in Italy > Veneto)
I just read an article

about Chioggia and it captured my interest. It seems to be a great place to visit. Chioggia is 100% Italian. Chioggia is close to Venice (Venezia) and is nicknamed Little Venice. Don’t use the nickname however; the people in Chioggia don’t like it. Their city is older and – so they think – much prettier. It’s just as colourful and (sweet) smelling as Venice. In Chioggia you will find canals, bridges, alleys, markets and a cathedral. And if you still want to visit Venice, no problem, Venice is just a boattrip away.

New Zealand

Just a thought:

1079 people want to go to New Zealand…

Wouldn’t it be amazing if all these people mysteriously arrived in New Zealand on the same day?

Columbia Icefield

(in Canada > Alberta)

Worth visiting!

Something completely different.

Located on the boundary of Banff an Jasper National Park is the largest icefield (130 square miles) in the Rocky Mountains. Meltwater from this icefield flows to 3 oceans: the Pacific, the Artic and the Atlantic. The biggest glacier is the Athabasca glacier (the one facing the visitors’ center). You can visit the middle of the glacier with the special Ice Explorer. During this tour the driver/guide will tell you al about the glacier and let you even out of the explorer so you can see the ice up close (and personal). You can also taste some of the meltwater. Snow at this point is 400 years old or maybe even older. From the visitors’ center to toe of the glacier is a hiking trail. Along the path there yearsigns posted. Here you can see where the toe was in a specific year. Years and years ago this thing was massive and amazing. Well, even though it is much smaller now, it still is.

Bergen

Worth visiting!

Bergen – gateway to the fjords.

Bergen is the old capital of Norway and is now the second city of Norway. It’s a lively city with lots of foreign influences.

Right at the waterfront there is the fish harbor and the Torget (market) with fresh produce (vegetables, fruit, flowers, souvenirs and fresh fish) Market days Mon-Friday 8:00-15:00. If you are a fish lover I can recommend a nice Norwegian roll with smoked salmon and dill.

At the Bryggen (the old wharfside) you find old houses and the old business centre. The buildings here are on the Unesco World Heritage list since 1980.

Things to do or see in Bergen:
  • The old city centre.
  • The Hanseatiske Museet (museum)
  • The Bryggen Museum
  • The Mariakirke (church)
  • The Bergenhus (fortress) with its Håkonshal en Rosenkrantztower
  • The Fløibanen to mount Fløyen

Some travel advice: don’t forget your raincoat or umbrella. Bergen is known for it’s rain.
