Glen Affric

News about this place

To quote the Forestry Commission:

Glen Affric is a very special place. It contains one of the largest ancient Caledonian pinewoods in Scotland as well as lochs, moorland and mountains.
This wide range of habitats make Glen Affric a haven for wildlife. There are many rare and special birds, animals and plants found here. Amongst many others look out for deer, Scottish crossbills, crested tits and if you’re very lucky, pine marten.
Glen Affric has many designations – it is a Caledonian Forest Reserve, a National Scenic Area and has recently been chosen as a National Nature Reserve.

Beirut

(in Lebanon)
I give up

If I don’t get killed by islamist extremists for having blue eyes an Israeli airstrike is bound to do me in.
Beirut, I’d love to see you, but I’m afraid it’ll have to be in another lifetime.

Worth visiting!

Mama Mia

Great Italian food, relaxed atmosphere, good prices!
Make sure you don’t order a full size meal as the portions are large enough to feed 3-4 people!
They serve the same Tiramisu they once served Ronald Reagan at the White House!

Tottori Sand Dunes

Worth visiting!

A review of this place: Sand

Ah, the Tottori Sand Dunes. Locals kept saying: “Don’t bother going there, it’s just a lot of sand!”, and you know what, they were not far off the mark!
However, the dunes are so extremely high and large that it’s really worth the trip. That and the chance to see elderly Japanese women paying premium cash to ride on a camel! Wooh!
If you feel like doing something crazy you can try riding said camels, or go paragliding or sandboarding (kind of like snowboarding without the snow). Good clean fun for all the family!

Tachikue Gorge

Worth visiting!

Tachikue Gorge

The province of Shimane in Japan is off the beaten path, so you can find some wonderful secret spots, little treasures hardly frequented by any tourists. Tachikue Gorge is such a place.
The scenery is really breathtaking!
If you hike along the river, you can find 1000 little Buddha statues placed near the rock wall.
They have a wonderful onsen (hot spring) with outdoor baths, so you have an incredible view over the river and the mountains as you take a long soak in the hot volcanic water.
Fantastic!

Daisen

Worth visiting!

Daisen

Daisen – literally “Big Mountain” – is the largest mountain in the Chugoku area.
This extinct volcano is 5,620ft high, and is a great place for hiking and watching spectacular red leaves in autumn and cherry blossom in spring.
Daisen is also home to Western Japan’s premier ski resort. Very fine power snow blows in all the way from Siberia!

Why I recommend this place to visitors

Very dangerous place. I always end up buying more books and eating more carrot cake in the cafe than I should ;)
Wonderful atmosphere!
