Machu Picchu, Cusco Region

Incredible

Yep, the bus ride up the mountain was a little scary, and I definitely don’t recommend eating food from the street vendors (gastroenteritis is no fun at 8,000 feet) but the ruins are gorgeous, no matter what the weather, and the city is HUGE!! I was expecting a small citadel and I was amazed at how many terraces and structures there are. You can easily spend a whole day exploring the ruins and the surrounding mountains. Make sure your tour guide begins with the climb up the stairs to the platform where you get a panoramic view of the ruins— you may feel a little out of breath once you get up top, but it’s the ancient city at your feet that will truly take your breath away! :-)

Görlitz, Sachsen

Lived here for a year...

East Germany is hard if you don’t speak much German— you don’t find as many English speakers as you do in the West. I found people to keep mostly to themselves and the nightlife to be rather quiet, but the city has some decent restaurants and a couple of fun bars (including one that has a salsa night in a cellar!). If you visit, stay at the Tuchmacher. Great hotel.

Gstaad, Canton of Berne

For the Rich and Richer...

I was asked to take a picture of a very nice Arab couple in Gstaad— they handed me a camera which turned out to be encased in gold with diamonds encrusted around the lens… Nice place!
