Mexicali, Baja California

So close, yet so far.

I stayed in a motel in Calexico California, which is just across the border from Mexicali, when I visited this Mexican city. You can see across the boarder very easily thru the various forms of fencing seen between the cities.

Mexicali is a HUGE city! I had the chance to experience the city while there to visit an internationaly know doctors clinic for people with Asthma.

When you first cross the boarder, be prepared to lace your way thru crowds of people trying to sell you everything from ponchos to “Gold” jewlry, and taxi rides.

I might caution a traveler to be cautious and go in pairs or groups. While I was there the Mexican police at the border caught a woman in a van trying to cross back into the USA with a dead womans body. She tried to pass “Her” off as asleep, but when the border patrol officer insisted she sit up and show identification, they discovered the horrifying truth. The body was of a white woman. She had been killed and after removing her internal organs, the people responsible had “Packed” her with drugs. In telling this, I want to make sure everyone understands that I am only relaying what I learned about this while I was there in the city. This occurance both shocked & horrified people from both sides of the border. I am in no way saying this is what a traveler should expect when visiting here… I am saying that there is safety in numbers when traveling anywhere in this world. I met some wonderful people during my visit to this city, and I in no way want to portray the mexican people in a bad light. I feel sure that someday I will visit this City again. Hopefully next time I will have time to visit Plaza De Toros. :0)

New Mexico

The picture you see is of the old church in Chimayo New Mexico. Thousands of people make a pilgrimage here by foot each year. They believe that mairacles happen here.

**************************

As a native New Mexican I thought I might offer some insight about our state. There are some beautiful places to visit here. The sunsets are some of the most breath taking you will ever find. Bring your camera and lots of film. Here are some places I feel are worth visiting while here…

Santa Fe: For a nostalgic look at our native culture.

Albuquerque: National Baloon festival in October, Old Town, Tram rides to the top of Sandia crest, The beautiful zoo. Flea markets for affordable indian jewelry and collectables (bargin prices)

Ft. Sumner: Frontier days in June, Billy the kid museum and Billys grave, Old Fort tour.

Clovis: Music festival. Buddy Holly recorded his first music here along with other artists such as Roy Orbison & LeAnne Rymes.

Rouidoso: Mountain retreats, casinos, Hourse racing

White sands: Beautiful white desert, Nasa space museum

Carlsbad: Carlsbad Caverns national park

Taos: Skiing

Chama: Beautifull mountain retreat, Toltec senic railroad tours

Farmington: Scenic San Juan valley, horse racing, museums, tribal casino. close to the four corners of the world national park. 50 miles from Durango CO and the Mountains.

Carlsbad: Dont miss seeing the beautifull Caverns, or the nightly bat flight from the mouth of the caverns.

Warnings:

Our state police are serious about seat belts and drinking & driving. Be smart and obey the laws.

Speeding in construction zones will get you double fines.

Road side rest areas and curio shops arent the cheapest place to buy turquoise and other indian collectables. Watch for flea markets and indian owned small shops in out of the way places.

When visiting Casinos and race tracks and other events. be sure to lock your valuables in the trunk or take them with you.

Roadside rest areas arent always clean, or safe. Avoid them if possible.

During the hot summer months you shouldnt leave pets unattended in your car. Animals can die in a very short time. NM law prohibits leaving children or animals alone in a vehicle. Can result in death of child or pet from heat. Harsh fines and jail for offenders!

Historic route 66 runs thru our great state and can be a wonderful trip thru vesteryear…be carefull though. When traveling the back roads obey the speed limit at all times, as a MAJOR source of income for these small towns comes from speeding tickets. Even native New Mexicans are cautious in these areas. Watch for livestock and wildlife when driving, especialy in mountain areas.

One last caution:

New Mexico reservations rank among the righest in alchaholism in the USA. Avoid driving at night in these area’s. If you encounter a drunk driver on a reservation roadway, avoid confrontation with the person. Drive slowly behind them untill you have have a safe area to pass. Not all indians are like this, so please dont treat our native population as uneducated, and slovenly. The indian nations have thier own police, and reservation law enforcement is smaller by populous than normal areas. If you encounter a problem sometimes it is better to leave the reservation and seek help.

I hope this helps you in your travels.
