Columbus, Ohio

Columbus

In my experiance, people who have never been to Columbus imagine it to be like the rest of Ohio. I suspect they think of cornfields, morbid obesity, ultra-conservatives, and hillbillies. Of course, as with most preconceived ideas, they are wrong. Columbus certainly isn’t as thrilling as say, oh, New York City but it is a shining star in Ohio made so by none other than the Ohio State University. Columbus would probably be another failed attempt on the part of Ohio to create a desireable city if it weren’t for the University and the thousands of young and trendy college students which come in ever year to attend it.

One of the first things any new comer should know about is the interesting layout of the city and it’s suburbs. In otherwords, there is absolutley nothing to do and nowhere interesting to go outside of the city limits aside from Easton Mall, which I highly reccomend for you shopaholics out there. There are more than 1,000 different resteraunts in our fair capital but alas, only 4 of them really have a hold on my tastebuds: there’s Haiku for you sushi lovers, North Star for the vegetarians, Barcelona for you Spanish cuisine lovers, and my personal favorite, The Refectory for you expensive French cuisine lovers.

The area I find myself to be in most often is Short North. It’s a somewhat pleasent part of town, if you ignore the hordes of homeless beggers which harrass you at every turn, which is home to numerous art galleries, nic-nac stores, bars, and resteraunts. The first Saturday of every month is Gallery Hop. A tremendously fun event in which every gallery opens it’s doors and hosts a seemingly endless barage of spectators. There are other amusing aspects as well, including live manicans, the man I lovingly call the random tuba guy, and trying to find somewhere to park within a ten mile radius of High Street.

The most exciting part about any new city is it’s mystery so I’d advise you to visit and experiance it for yourself.
