Detroit, Wayne County

Detroit: Not as bad as you're thinking

I’m not from the midwest and recently visited Detroit for the first time. With all the bad press it gets, I was expecting a war zone or something. It’s really not that bad, honestly. Yes, it’s a little rough around the edges. It has its bad neighborhoods like all cities do, but it is oddly charming if you give it a chance.

The area around Wayne State is nice, as is Greek town. I wasn’t impressed with the Mexican restaurants, but there are some good Polish restaurants. You’ll need a car to get around here because everything is spread out and public transportation is bad. You’re probably not going to get mugged or shot, but I have to admit the city is a little creepy to walk around in at night.

Machu Picchu, Cusco Region

Okay, so if you're in Peru you have to go, but...

It’s really not that great. I know it’s famous, I know it’s the one thing people think of when you mention Peru, but honestly it was the biggest let down. I agree with Tiago’s comment, a lot of Machu Picchu is actually very reconstructed, meaning it’s not entirely real. I skipped the Inca trail and opted for a hike through a more remote part of the Andes. I highly, highly recommend this. Also, make sure to check out some of the lesser-known ruins. They are far more authentic, less crowded, and infinitely more rewarding.

Phoenix, Arizona

Untitled

This isn’t the type of place I typically visit, but I went for a weekend because my mom wanted to go for her birthday. Just know what you’re getting yourself into and it’s actually pretty fun. There’s not too much to actually see here, and it does remind me of a giant suburb (I highly recommend renting a car). Pretty much all there was to do was shop, sit by the pool in the sun, and drink. Definitely fun in it’s own way but I was ready to come home after a few days of it.
