Porcupine Mountains, Ontonagon
Absolutely Beautiful
It’s a 14-hour drive from my home in Michigan’s lower peninsula, but worth every minute. Went in early September, while the days were still warm, but the cool nights had started to color the leaves red and gold. Bald eagles, sandhill cranes, bears, porcupines and deer seemed to be everywhere I looked. Hiked all our food/water/clothes/gear three miles up the mountain (whew) to an adorable rustic cabin and spent a few days ducking into closed off mines, dipping toes into waterfalls and Lake Surperior, picnicking by the Lake of the Clouds and getting great exercise. Plan to take (or rent) kayaks next time.
The complete darkness miles into the forest made for amazing stars at night. Take a friend though, as you’re a long way from a functional cell tower, doctor or professional bear wrestler. ;)
Don’t miss the pasties, thimbleberry jam and whitefish, all tasty northern treats.
Worth the trip if you have the opportunity.
