I think you could easily say that Ely is the true gem of the Fens. It’s an elegant town with refined architecture. I went in September, on a clear day with blue skies – it was absolutely lovely in those conditions. The cathedral is amazing but they charge you to go in and I don’t think it’s right to charge people a set amount to enter God’s house. So I didn’t. I’d happily give a donation if asked but I don’t think God would really approve on a mandatory fee!! Also, Oliver Cromwell came from Ely and I think his house is definitely worth a look.
