basque tapas  — 3 years ago

I have to say the food here is great, but it will definitely make the wallet lighter. I was there for a special occasion, though, so the prices were not my primary consideration.

The menu supposedly changes frequently. When I was there it seem pretty heavy on the red meat type of things, but there were a few vegetarian options and a few seafood things. For you veggie-types, the co-owner said that if there is meat in a dish she would note that in the description, so one does not have to wonder about hidden fish sauces or meat stocks. Even so, things seemed pretty meaty here.

I would advise sitting at one of two outside tables (as I did) if the weather is nice or get a seat at the bar and interact with the chef(s).

They do not take reservations, and the place is not that big, so you may/probably will have to wait. I went early on a Sunday, so it was not a problem.

So, yes, the food was great, the desserts were great, the weather was great, and I had an enjoyable time. These aren’t cheap tapas, so it is probably not a good place to go if you are a big eater. Although maybe the meat dishes are more substantial. Their cheeses are a bit outrageously priced… like $3.50 an ounce (or less) or something crazy like that… I will be charitable and assume they don’t want you filling up on cheese so that is why they are freakishly expensive. On the other hand, that price seems common in Seattle.
