I am a little ambivalent about Santorini. Of course, it is one of the most beautiful places you will ever visit, but it is a little too touristy. If you don’t mind that, read the next paragraph for what to check out. If you do, read the last paragraph for some good alternatives.
Santorini is known for a lot of things: being really just one big volcano (which you can climb), maybe the ancient home of the Minoans (maybe!), good wine, good tomatoes, beautiful sunsets (the “best in the world”), black-sand beaches, good bars, good food, rare and gorgeous hand-made crafts and jewelry, hot springs, cool houses, pretty views, I could go on and on. The things to check out would be hiking the volcano and swimming in the hot springs generated by the volcano, any of their tomatoes or wine (or any of their local food or drink for that matter), and the sunsets. I visited a mueseum there but it was one of the more boring ones that I visited in all of Greece, so I wouldn’t really recommend that unless your big into that stuff (which I actually am). Also, check out Morgan’s, a bar in the “downtown” area. Probably the best bar in all of Greece. Road Rules even went there for one episode like 3 years ago. We were there every night for 4 nights straight. Santorini is surely lots of fun.
The bad things about Santorini don’t necessarily outweigh the good things, but they should be noted. During the summer, there are just way too many tourists when the cruise ships roll up and unload all of their passengers. Also, the island feels really small. Good alternatives if you’re simply looking for a pretty island in Greece without all of the hubhub (but with the same charm) would be Naxos or Samos.
Let me know if you want to know more.
