Beautiful place, lovely people — 2 years ago
Went to Kili in July 2004. Definitely one of the high points of my life and my experience on the mountain will live with me forever. Tanzania is a poor country (and this sounds corny) but it’s people are rich with life.
On the mountain you experience every type of terrain the world has to offer. Starting off with Rain Forest/Jungle and at 10,000ft you emerge into Alpine Meadow and scrubland. Above 12,500 it’s rock and desert. The landscape in the desert near Kibo looks like something from Mars. The ground is red and the plain is littered with rocks and boulders that were violently ejected from the belly of the volcano eons ago. On the summit you have fields and cliffs of ice. It’s a truly bizarre and wonderful sight. Ice at 2 degrees below the equator!!!
The ice cliffs reminded me of the Cliffs of Moher here in Ireland. They must of been several hundred feet high and they looked fantastic. Highly recommend going to Kili and remember the secret to getting to the top is Polé Polé (Slowly Slowly)
