I’ve been over Greenland but I haven’t been to Greenland. Amazing glaciers—they’ll probably be gone soon.
When I was a kid, I was scared of glaciers. No kidding. I saw a news story about how there might be a new ice age and the glaciers would come down and cover North America again (it was the 70s—they didn’t know about global warming yet). I had a conversation with my father that went something like this.
“Dad, I’m scared.”
“What are you scared of, John Markos?”
“I’m scared of glaciers.”
My father suppresses a laugh.
“John Markos, you don’t have to worry about glaciers. A glacier moves about as fast as a garage. If a glacer were at our next door neighbor’s house right now, you would be all grown up by the time it got here.”
“Are you sure about that, Dad?”
“Yes, I’m sure, John Markos.”
When I was in New Zealand I got to walk on a glacier, which was quite exciting for me, considering my phobia.
