Sergeant William H.Carney awarded Congressional Medal of Honor — 3 years ago
During the battle of Fort Wagner, Sergeant Carney picked up the regimental colors which a dying standard bearer had dropped. He led the attack on the fort. He was badly wounded on two occasions during the fighting.
The United States Colored Infantry was established by General Order No. 143 of the War Department in May of 1863. A Bureau for Colored Troops was established within the War Department. Its head was Major Charles W Foster.
