A question about this place:
Vinyl Record Stores. A friend (Alan) asked me the following, "Doesn't matter if you call them records or albums, I'm looking for recommendations on some great vinyl shops in and around Seattle ...  — 1 year ago
News: Vermillion YAB  — 1 year ago

Looks like Yet Another Bar is going in on 11th & Pike next to Barca. From the looks of the liquor license application it will be called Vermillion.

Let’s get a drink when it opens!

A question about this place:
Is the new Seattle slogan "Metronatural" just horrible or am I being too hard on us?  — 1 year ago
News: Ranger Rick of Pest Removal (pigeons, rats, snakes, racoons, etc.)  — 1 year ago

I just had a great experience with a new wildlife pro—he basically removes pests from your home. That can be racoons, rats, snakes … or in my case, pigeons from the attic. Super organized and thorough and a great guy who is totally reasonably priced for the service he delivers. He does clean-up, too, if animals make a mess (they pretty much destroyed my attic!).

News: These are YOUR places  — 1 year ago

If you’re new to 43 Places you may not realize that all the places on this website have been added by users. Once upon a time, all we had were country names and a few major cities. 43 Places is a community effort where users are actively filling up the site with their favorite spots and the places they want to visit.

Along these lines all of us users can also correct and enhance data on 43 Places via the Report A Problem (RAP) tool. The RAP tool has been around for a short while, but users have already reported and closed over 14,000 problems.

What can you do with the RAP tool?
  • merge duplicate places
  • move a place in the heirarchy
  • correct a place name or mispelling
  • add an AKA (also known as) name to a place – NEW!
  • correct bad photos of a place (by correcting flickr tags)
  • report an “other” problem

The RAP tool is pretty slick—it allows you to search and correct place data on the spot.

How do you report a problem?
To report a problem click on the Report a problem link located at the bottom of every place page under “Help improve this page”.

Thanks for all the places you’ve added to date and thanks for keeping all the places you care about in good order.

News: new 43 Places profile page  — 1 year ago
There’s a new profile page on 43 Places. It went out a couple days early (we’ve got slippery fingers in this heat) so bear with us as we tweak a few things. Some new things you should notice:
  • tabs for: places, events, cheers, photos, groups, checkins, entries
  • a new footer for navigating to the other profile pages (this replaces the links up top)
  • ‘block this person’ is more prominent

The bottom of the page has become more important as that’s where we put all sorts of information about your activity on other sites in addition to the travel map. And there are probably a few other things I’m not remembering—let us know if you have any questions/comments.

I should take the opportunity to say that there is a lot of thinking put into the new profile page. Similar changes will slowly be rolled out to all 5 sites. It’s basically an excercise in balance—making room for a family of features and content that are growing up around the 43 dinner table.

News: new 43 Places profile page  — 1 year ago
We just launched a new profile page for 43 Places. We actually didn’t intend to launch it quite yet but someone’s finger slipped and … there now you’re looking at it when you visit your 43 Places profile page. You may notice:
  • tabs for places, events, cheers, groups, checkins & entries
  • fancy new footer that links to the other sites
  • ‘block this user’ is more prominent

Ivan will be working a few of the larger bugs out over the next few hours—then we’ll be refining a bit over the coming days. Hold on tight!

Question: What do you know about mulching?  — 1 year ago
I’ve been doing a ton of weeding in my garden lately. I planted it about 4 years ago so a lot of the plants are pretty mature—and the weeds come in big growth spurts. I’ve mulched once since I planted. Got the dark brown mulch from that soil place on Raineer Ave South. Two mulching quesions:
  1. does the brown mulch suppress weed growth?
  2. or does it just enrich the soil?

I’ve been told that wood chips are best for suppressing weed growth but I have no desire to put wood chips in my yard. Any mulching advice for weeds would be appreciated. Thanks!

News: Draw your neighborhood boundary on a map  — 1 year ago

On neighborhood maps you can now draw and edit boundary lines. It’s pretty sweet. I just drew the neighborhood boundary for Capitol Hill in Seattle.

You’ll see a “create neighborhood boundary” link at the top of neighborhood map pages. Clik that to get started. A tip: when you’re setting points for drawing the boundary line you can always click “remove last point” to go back a pinpoint.
