Inis Mór  — 2 years ago

Inishmore is the Anglicized spelling of Inis Mór, largest of the Aran Islands, though by no means large. Irish is still the first language of most of its inhabitants, though most everybody speaks English as well. I believe the population was something like 270 people when I visited in 2000. The people are delightful, if a bit wary of tourists (who can blame them? They live on an island for a reason, presumably), and music plays a large part in the culture.

One of the highlights of my three day stay here was visiting Dún Aengus, an Iron Age fort sited right on the edge of a sheer 300 foot cliff overlooking the Atlantic. I’ll try and dig up some photos to post of this amazingly beautiful yet stark place.
