I love the Queen Mary! It’s so beautiful- and I love WWII history. The Queen Mary was painted grey and used as a trans-Atlantic troop transport ship during WWII. When I was little, though, I developed an intense fear of shipwrecks- and I think this is due in part to my parents taking me into the dark, rusty boiler room in the Queen Mary. Soon after this, the Titanic was discovered, and I found a resemblence between the boiler room and the sunken Titanic… and I just freaked out. I don’t know why. The boiler rooms are dark and cavernous, and I think just being in there creeped me out. In college, I decided to face my fears and go to the Halloween haunted house at the Queen Mary, which went through the boiler and engine rooms. Bad idea! Almost total darkness and people jumping out at me did not help! So, again, a couple of years ago, I went back with my best friend, and we went on the “ghosts and legends” tour, which also went into the boiler room. They then take you into the bow of the ship and recreate the sinking of the Curacaoa- the smaller ship the Queen Mary sank by running into it. Ugh! Another bad idea! I’ll stay above deck next time. That part of the ship is quite lovely.
