The cities are ordered by population. Status of population ~ Jan 2006. Cities in this list include satellite municipalities. There is also a list excluding surrounding cities and towns and those are the largest cities with ONE mayor and that have distinctive city limits: "10 Largest Cities (Municipalities?) in the World by Population":http://www.listsofbests.com/list/8695
I find the larger a city is the the more news comes from there – the more important it is to know where the city is and possible even visit it one day.
Interesting facts of history, the largest cities by year were:
350 Rome first over 500 thousand
800 Bagdad first over 1 Million
1860 London first over 5 Million
1948 New York first over 10 Mill
1973 Tokyo fisrst over 20 Million
For a feeling, current population in millions:
35 Tokyo (Rank #1)
24 Mexico City #2
22 Seoul NYC Sao Paulo #5-7
16 Los Angeles #9
15 Manila #14
12 London #21
10 Paris Chicago #26-27
8 HK Johannesburg S’Frisco #38-40
6 Dallas Philadelphia Santiago Boston #46-51
4 Berlin Milano Seattle Durban Roma #74-102
The list will change continuously!
Mumbai = was Bombay
Kolkata = was Calcutta
I used the original source list (from 2003) since it had the rankings for cities both with and without surrounding metro areas. From that I created the 2 lists. I think I only put the top 10 cities because I didn’t want to keep track of all the changes. (too lazy!) Plus I made a couple other ‘top 10’ of the world lists and they fit nicely together. I tried the link you provided but could not find any data, only links to other sites. :(
Is Chicago in Illinois, the 43places tried to force me to Kansas and Michigan???
The Ruhr Valley is not a city at all, it is a whole region and river valley, so the combined cities there of Dortmund and Diesburg are here listed under “Dortmund” and not “Ruhr” ?
Sorry, I would have replied sooner about Chicago but the only way to know if a comment is posted to a community list is to check the list! If it was a personal list I would have received an email and responded immediately.
Yes, Chicago is in Illinois.
Houston is at #57, but it’s bigger than both Boston and Miami.
