May I extend the list?
I find the larger a city is the the more news comes from there – the more important it is to know where the city is and possible even visit it one day.
http://www.citypopulation.de (english and german) offers regular updates and notes to these cities.

I used the original source list (from 2003) since it had the rankings for cities both with and without surrounding metro areas. From that I created the 2 lists. I think I only put the top 10 cities because I didn’t want to keep track of all the changes. (too lazy!) Plus I made a couple other ‘top 10’ of the world lists and they fit nicely together. I tried the link you provided but could not find any data, only links to other sites. :(

Is Chicago in Illinois, the 43places tried to force me to Kansas and Michigan???
The Ruhr Valley is not a city at all, it is a whole region and river valley, so the combined cities there of Dortmund and Diesburg are here listed under “Dortmund” and not “Ruhr” ?
