This list is taken from the 15th Anniversary issue of the National Geographic Traveler. Below is the introduction given on the web site (hope this does not violate any copyright laws). "To celebrate NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC TRAVELER’s 15th anniversary, we’ve put together a landmark issue. Its contents: a roundup of the 50 greatest places of a lifetime. These are destinations we believe no curious traveler should miss. How did we choose them? For the past 18 months we’ve canvassed our colleagues here at the National Geographic Society, perhaps the most widely traveled staff of any organization. Whittling down the globe’s greatest places isn’t easy. But we did it. And here they are—50 (well, 51) of the best urban spaces, wild places, paradises found, country unbound, and world wonders. Some places will echo your own travel passions. Others, we hope, will surprise and inspire you. To that end, we’ve collected the best links for all 51 destinations here in our online edition. …but represents only one counry of 192 in this world! The rest of America is ignored too; Canada, Mexico, Caribbean, Central and South America don’t exist there!

Perhaps the authors should have titled the list 50 Places to See in the United States of America because others in North America often object to the shorthand.

Added the missing sites (almost)
I added some of the missing sites and re-ordered the list to match the list in the article. I was not sure what to add for Cyberspace and Outerspace so I left those off.

there are 2 "44"s and no “48” or “49”. I havent changed anything – not sure how.
