Neither here nor there: places with multiple parents

The fact that on 43places places cannot have multiple parents (though they are both in this *and* that, part of this *and* part of the other...) is a big problem which causes many places to be, um, *_misplaced_*. Sometimes they are actually entered multiple times (a problem, because it's only one thing, not more), at other times, they're in one place but not at the right level to acknowledge the fact that one place "spans" multiple others. Yes, geography is messy - it's not a neat hierarchy like some database designers would like it to be. :) I thought to gather them in this list to hopefully make the scale of the problem more clear. Or just provide another way at looking geography... *_Feel free to add whatever places you come across that really have multiple parents even when that's not reflected in 43places -- yet!_*

any river...

Any river is going to be in multiple places. When/if they fix this one, that’s one of the first things we should clean up…

Beijing

Agree

Actually there are only 32 provinces in China, but now there are over 60 places under that.

Some of them are over-province places, such as Great Wall, Yangtze River etc. I think these places should be split into each different provinces or even counties, so you can say I visited Great Wall at Beijing, but not whole Great Wall. If you really visit whole Great Wall, ok, check them one by one.

I think that’s the correct way.

Places?

There should not be any problems with “places” if they were limited to Countries, provinces/states, counties/regions, cities/towns/villages and places exact places within them.

Not only rivers and national parks, but mountains, pans/lakes/seas/oceans and deserts should be listed under that place they fit into.

Examples:

Lake Eire – North America – other

Mississippi River – USA – other

Great Wall – China – other

Nile River – Africa – other

Mont-Aux-Sources – Africa – other

Sahara Desert – Africa – other

Amazon Jungle – S.America – other

The group “other” under a continent would mean a place other than a country and the group “other” under a country would mean a place other than a state/province. Just a suggestion.

Doesn't work that way.

For every continent, the places that come underneath it are countries. For every country, the states or provinces come underneath it. I didn’t set this up — it’s the way the robots set it up, and it’s why we have this list in the first place…

If you want to argue with them, join the Data Janitors group on 43places and do it there.

I agree with your initial statement and made a good suggestion giving an easy solution. What do you think of the solution? If I can get some support here It will be easier to convince the 43places sister team to help us. This is not an arguement!

I can’t actually move say, the Mississippi River to the United States — I have helper and resolver powers over on 43places, but that’s beyond what I can do.

You’re looking at the “sister team” — most of the people moving things to here and writing and responding to these things are on Data Janitors, but right now you’re only talking to me and I need to get breakfast and start my real work day. If you have a good idea, this isn’t the place to ask it. Go over to Data Janitors and make your case there.

The current plan...

The current plan is that when The Robots [the people who actually made this site] allow us to have places that can be in multiple places, we link together the different pieces of the Great Wall and rather than let people say that they’ve been to one part in a specific province.

Hmmm...

I think as people get used to looking at where a place is, well, placed within the “hierarchy” they will hopefully realize to check off the right “version” of it… for example, to say you had been to the entire Appalachian Trail, you really should go and check off the chunk of it within each state. On the other hand, maybe you’ve only visited the Mississippi River within the confines of one state. Just some thoughts as we try to make sense of our world, erm, places… =)

Now a question: are we supposed to be adding duplicates to this list which should not be duplicated at all (i.e. there is a Walt Disney World in Orlando and one in Lake Buena Vista, but only the LBV one is correct)? When I come across those, I report them in the problems, but did you want those added here too or no?

Zuid Holland and Noord Holland doesn’t have multiple parents!!

And Holland is missing

This list has gotten 2 cheers.
