Major Works of Philip Johnson

Philip Cortelyou Johnson (8 July 1906– 25 January 2005) was an influential American architect. With his thick, round-framed glasses, Johnson was the most recognizable figure in American architecture for decades. In 1930, he founded the Department of Architecture and Design at MoMA and later (1978), as a trustee, he was awarded an American Institute of Architects Gold Medal and the first Pritzker Architecture Prize, in 1979. He was a student at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. When Johnson died in January 2005, he was survived by his long time life partner David Whitney, who died only a few months later, on June 12, 2005.

Johnson in Houston

Just wanted to let you know I added photos of the Bank of America center and Pennzoil Place.

Philip Johnson has a lot more here, though. I’m not sure what you consider “major works,” but he also designed:

Transco Tower, now Williams Tower

Chapel of Saint Basil, University of St. Thomas

Edward P White Memorial, also at the University of St. Thomas, and one of his final projects

I believe he did a building for the University of Houston as well.

Let me know if you’d like me to add these to the list!

Thanks! I appreciate it. Sure, if you want to add those, that would be great!
