Travel: Countries of the world

This is a list of the countries of the world as of 4/22/06 and I found it at the following website: <http://www.nationsonline.org/oneworld/countries_of_the_world.htm>. It's as definitive as you get in an ever changing world... According to the website, "With the addition of Timor-Leste (East Timor) in May of 2002, there are now 193 independent sovereign states in the world, 61 dependent areas, and five disputed territories. " The website above lists country names in many languages too!

Makin' the list...

Well, I’ve made it through the D countries – It’ll take a few days to get all the countries listed… The countiesy I can’t find so far is Bouvet Island, Cape Verde and for some reason can’t get Columbia to work…

Nations of the World?

Great list and progress, I thought to do similar….

There is also a list here called ""The Travelers’ Century Club’s “Directory of Countries”" (see my profile) but it is very detailed and not alphabetically odered. It correctly splits a lot of Nations into detailed islands and regions for the very advanced traveller, the true explorer and adventurer! Do you mean “… Countries ANDREGIONS of the World” too?

If you want YOUR list to be definitive, specialy useful and succesful, name it either “Current 194 Political Nations of the Earth” or “The 191 Members of the United Nations”

You then don’t have to do with worries like Bouvet Island (=Norway) or French Antarctic Lands (=France) or Hong Kong (=China) neither current affairs and disputes ……

Anyway, to help;

Columbia > see Colombia

Bouvet Island (= Norwegian Protectorates)

Cape Verde (not Cape Verdi?) correct, a republic (try again)

Please continue, i’ll help…..

Continued...

I’m through the “G’s”. Can’t find French Metropolitan to add to the list. Also, can’t get Georgia on the list.

You are doing great!

Thanks, I will be using this list too and thousands of others eventually too?

I’m a bit of an experienced traveller, see www.globosapiens.net/rangutan but never heard of that French Metropolis. They might mean either the C?te?Azure or Metropol de’?Paris which are fantastic entities but really only CITY-vs- PROVINCE disputes within the nation!

Georgia is now NOTONLY a state of the USA but also an independent country, in Asia but christian, south of the Caucas Mountains. Check again, i’m sure the country is already in the databank somewhere (or it may be mistakingly deleted by an american?)

A heroic feat to list all the countries of the world… I offer my assistance in this endeavor, commencing with Macedonia. When the list is complete, I shall travel the globe via book!

Added these:

Iv’ve added Switzerland, Taiwan (Republic of China) and Georgia, sorted them and Colombia alphabetically. I had a problem with Geogia (Asia, not the US State) with my Olympics list too! After a tip by staff, it can somehow only be found using its ID-number, “102944”.

Is it worth

splitting up UK into Scotland, Wales and England?

No!

N’Ireland, Channel Islands?

For a more complex list of govenrnments, nations and dependancies rather then use “The Travelers’ Century Club’s Directory of Countries” http://www.listsofbests.com/list/657 which lists 315 places splitting some of the nations like Britain.

Iv’e deleted Yak, Chuuk and Pohnpei from here as they (like Kosrae and the Caroline Islands) are simply states of Micronesia, a Federation.

Great start!

You have a great start. When I was 15 I had been to only 4 countries. Now at 47 I can boast 52, about 20%.

It is a good idea to write some notes on your memories before you get old. Your generation is so lucky to have the internet :-)

Can there really only be 234 countries in the world?

Well, there are a bit fewer than 200 independent states in the world, but the organization this list refers to currently lists 249 countries (including some dependent areas and disputed territories). So this list should be updated.

Trivia

There are 193 members of the United Nations. The Olympic Commission has allowed some dependencies (example Hong Kong, Bermuda, Puerto Rico) to participate separately so that 206 countries will participate in the 2008 Olympic Games.

Opion Poll: Do layovers count?

Should “layovers” count? In my opinion, they should not. When you say you’ve been to a country, it should mean you’ve actually left the airport and experienced the country. But if they should count, then I get to add 5 more countries to my list!! ;O) Thoughts?

Members Choice

I think it is up to each individual member to decide whether a country should count or not. I have marked Kenya, United Arab Emerates and Cote d’Ivoire to my list because my experiences, even only at their airports was enough for me; using the restroom, eating funny snacks, smelling the smog of Africa, dealing with strange languages and awkward security, foreign gestures and customs. Even if just a few hours, the experience is mid-boggling! I added Paraguay to my own list too, we crossed the bridge from Brazil near the Itaipu Dam to go shopping and have lunch in the town across the border just for about 4 hours. I would say not having set foot on a country, waiting in the plane or flying over a territory doesn’t count.

At globosapiens.net we need to write a report for it to count towards a country count! See for example:

http://www.globosapiens.net/rangutan/travel-reports.html

hmmm

I like to say I’ve “visited” a country when I am able to go to “tourist sites”, photograph the locals, see the good and the bad (and the ugly). :O) During my layover in Japan, I didn’t get to experience very much since everyone around me was in a rush (like typical airports). But I guess I can add more places if layovers should count.

Papua New Guinea, definitely a country.

Also, Tahiti and French Polynesia are listed separately, but Tahiti is part of French Polynesia.

And aren’t Vanuatu and New Caladonia the same place? Not sure about that one, but I think there was a name change a few years ago.
