Representation

I want to try and not over-represent sites on the list. I don’t think it is reasonable to list sites twice on a list like this just because the site crosses some state boarders. The map they have at the WHC doesn’t even have any boarders (to show that these belong to the world)..

Over-representation of certain sites gives a false image of the “percentage completed” and it gives them a false importance.

Therefore sites such as the Struve Geodetic Arc will not seem ten times more important than Paris or Rome

Please report all edits of the list so that representation is transparent.

Where the trans-boundary sites are on the list

Jesuit Missions of the Guaranis are listed under Argentina, since only the Ruins of Sao Miguel das Missoes are in Brazil

Fertö / Neusiedler See, I’ve listed “in” Austria, since of the lake’s 315 km², 240 km² are located on the Austrian side (3/4) and 75 km² on the Hungarian and most people visit the Austrian side.

Struve Geodetic Arc I’ve listed “in” Finland, since it has 6 geodetic points (beating Belarus by one and Sweden, Norway and Ukraine by two). (list). It was also originally proposed by Aarne Veriö of Finland and the National Land Survey of Finland launched the first point in the renewed Arc. (1) I guess the most important points are still the endpoint in Hammerfest and the first point in The Old Tartu Observatory.

The Belfries of Belgium and France I’ve listed in France for now since the Belgian site was put in Brugge and renamed to “The Belfry Tower” therefore only refering to that specific one

Mont Perdu & the Pyrénées I’ve listed “in” Spain, since Mont Perdu’s summit is in Spain and since it’s easier to reach it from Spain, as the northern side is much steeper.

Stone Circles of Senegambia I’ve listed “in” Gambia, since the culture that created them and the site itself is centered on The River Gambia.

The Frontiers of the Roman Empire I’ve Listed “in” the UK. Since Hadrian’s wall was transcribed to the heritage list earlier and is more impressive and better preserved than the GermanLimesGermanicus

Muskauer Park / Park Muzakowski I’ve listed as German.

Potala Palace I’ve listed under Tibet and not China. In line with the principle of primacy of geography over current politics.

Jerusalem, along with all other heritage sites in Israel/Palestine are listed “in” Israel. This can be seen to be in line with the aforementioned principle if “Israel” is seen as as a name of the territory and not as referring to the State of Israel.

The Curonian Spit I’ve listed “in” Lithuania, rather than Russia, though it’s a little bigger on the Russian side. The Russians have recently opened an oil-rig just off the protected area…

There is a little bug with the numbering which I hope will fix it self. There is a ghost 582 so the list appears one number too long.
