all in all a good list, but i would like to know – why so much stuff outside of detroit? novi, mackinac island, etc – not detroit, and there is plenty to do in town.

If the riots of 67 hadn’t happened and Detroit remained the center of attention for the region that would make more sense. Focusing only on downtown would take many sweet places off this list. Detroit is the sum of its suburbs.

Besides, the Everybody Hates A Tourist LOB series has not been confined simply to the cities themselves. Salem is on the Boston list. Milwaukee is on the Chicago list.

Think of it like, if you were to experience what a region offers, you should see these places.

Anyone that lives in/near Detroit better have been to Novi, better have gone to Mackinac, etc.

They aren’t meant to be tourist traps and some of them are not well known at all, but they offer a special thing to those that take the time to go there. Those that use it as a checklist can feel comfortable that they have experienced Detroit and that includes its surounding cities.

Faraway places like Mackinac and Joker Marchant Stadium (where the Tigers do spring training) fit because going to those places is something Detroiters that travel around should experience.
