Travel Holiday (now defunct) magazine published this list in November 2000. It rated the museums on the collection, display, building, shopping, food and "fun factor," with the weight going to the collection itself. It has proven to be a very good tool.

I’m really surprised by the omission of a couple of fine galleries (not that the above aren’t all worthy), and coincidentally they’re all in the Great Lakes/Midwest region:

Cincinnati Art Museum

Toledo Museum of Art

Alright-Knox Gallery, Buffalo

Indianapolis Museum of Art

Minneapolis Institute of the Arts

I think we should just expand the list to 30 ;)
