Worth visiting!

The Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge

Part of The Big Dig project in Boston. It is the widest cable-stayed bridge in the world. Named after civil rights activist Lenny Zakim and the American colonists who fought the British in the Battle of Bunker Hill. Bruce Springsteen played at the Dedication.

During construction the City opened the bridge to pedestrian traffic on October 6, 2002 and we ran down to get in line with 800,000 others. Walking over the bridge and clapping for the workers who lined the sides felt majestic and historic like the 150,300 people who paid 1 cent to first walk the Brooklyn Bridge on May 24, 1883 must have felt.

Now you can only view it from the car either driving over or past it, but it is still beautiful and awe-inspiring & the lights have different colors depending on the season. Just driving over it makes me smile.

“Just driving over it makes me smile.” Me too! Every time! It’s just such a gorgeous piece of architecture, and I’m proud that Zakim is commemorated by it.

(BTW, did you hear that the I93 Big Dig tunnels are getting named after Tip O’Neill? Soon you’ll take the Zakim, past the Gardens, to the Tip. I love Boston!)
