The U of T site is a really good resource, especially if you’re willing to take a room in a shared house. If you or (anyone you know) knows someone – anyone! – who goes to U of T, sweet-talk them into lending you their user name and library card #.

2nd the recommendation re http://www.viewit.ca – has a good reputation and I know of some of the people behind it.
The Toronto Star (newspaper) generally has tbe best classified section in the city – they have a site at http://www.torontostarclassifieds.com/
Greenwin and TransGlobe (I think) are two of the larger property management firms with sites that will list apartments.
The U of T Housing recommendation is good. Given that you could try York University, George Brown College et al for listings.
Biggest thing is to decide where you need to live (which part of the city) and how important is access to transit. Prices away from downtown should be a lot better than downtown.

I second craiglist. It’s not limited to Annex / University area… Unless that IS what you want.
Have a good move~

My prefered method is to walk around the area I’m interested in and find the ‘for rent’ signs.
Craigslist is handy of course, but it still doesn’t have really wide adoption.
ViewIt has a really bad UI and poor search functionality (or it did 6 months ago last time I checked).
Don’t be shy about checking the newspaper either.

I found my apartment in Toronto from Now magazine. It’s a free weekly newspaper.
The rental listing is available every Thursday.
You can probably check it out online too. Try www.nowmagazine.com
Good luck!

Thanks everyone for your help… it was greatly appreciated!
Craigslist I found was the best option. I really really found it useful!
