Worth visiting!

A question about this place:
Does anyone have any tips about Hong Kong? I'm going in July and I'd like to know what kind of things I should really do or places that I should really go while I'm there.  — 2 years ago

Hi Gracieloos

Id recommend Ocean Park, Tiger Balm gardens. And any and all the markets you can find:) There is fantastic shopping and fantastic food in Hong Kong. Its all so compact you can do most anything.
I also recommend taking a trip out to the Po lin monastery to see the Tian Tian Buddha. Which is the largest bronze buddha statue in the world.
You can get a fantastic vegetarian meal at the monastery too.

Enjoy, Hong Kong is a great place to visit.

Lan Kwai Fong is the place to go in terms of night life. I’ll be there July 20-24!! Have fun!!

I went to Lan Kwai Fong to party and it was fun but it was filled with American tourists getting drunk and stupid. Not that I have anything against that (I do that often) but only when I’m in the US. I don’t usually travel 8000 miles to hang out with drunk American tourists. I can do that next door. I have heard that the Kowloon side has more Chinese and gives a more authentic Hong Kong experience, but I have not experienced it first hand.

hello are you asking abt where to go in hong kong? cos i am not sure of your question??
anyway, it really depends on wat u wanna see and do in hk. Apart from the PoLin Temple in Lantau Is. (one of my fav spot), i think Saigon in Kowloon Penasula and Stanley in HK Is. is a good place to visit, away from the fast pace city in central and you can have a feel of the rural part of hk, not exactly rural thou, but at a diff pace of life….
Nighe view at the Peak is a std place to go but you will definitely like it so much,go in the evening b4 the sun set and see the light slowly lighten up in the city…. it is the most beautiful night view i have saw so far… everytime i just feel reluctant to go away….haha…
there are many interesting places in hk, if it is ur first time there, then all this tourist must see will keep u occupied for a few days…else u have to specified where n wat u wanna go n do….:) have a good time

Hey…
If you want to shop at shopping centres, you can go to Causeway Bay, Shatin…etc.

For Sightseeing -> Go to Victoria Peak for the night scenary. There is a wax museum at the peak, you may want to check that too.
For Shopping -> Tsim Sha Tsui has loads of shops for your retail therapy. Night markets will be at Ladies Street(Mongkok station)and Temple Street(Yau Ma Tei station). The night markets close around 11.30pm to 12am depending on the crowd.

You may want to consider going to Macau too. =)

On the Kowloon side you should go to Mong Kok and that area for street market shopping (ie. Ladies’ Market) and there’s also a very interesting Bird Market as well.

The area around Times Square in Causeway Bay (which is probably THE busiest area in the city) yields some interesting shops and restaurants if you do some exploring.

SoHo also has some neat little boutiques and restaurants. It’s one of the few areas where you can see more of the historical sides of HK.

Go up to The Peak on a clear night. The view of the city is spectacular (though the shopping there is exorbitantly priced for tourists)

Another tourist ripoff area is the shopping at Stanley. It’s a good place to visit, the beach can be nice…just try not to buy anything there. There isn’t anything you can’t get cheaper elsewhere anyway.

If you’re not looking for street market shopping and want to go upscale, Pacific Place mall in Admiralty is where you want to go buy REAL designer goods.

If you want to buy electronics, stay away from many of the little stores in Kowloon. That area is infamous for its sketchy stores. Go to either a big electronics chain, or one that someone you know implicitly trusts.

The Big Buddha temple on Lantau Island is quite a sight. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes, as it’s a hike up the stairs to there.

I personally find the quality of the museums in HK to be a bit lacking.

Take the Star Ferry across the bay at least once. It’s one of my favorite experiences.

General Tips for Traveling in HK: It’s broiling hot in HK in the summer, but you should still bring a light sweater or jacket because the A/C everywhere can be FREEZING!

The transportation system is one of the best in the world. Get yourself an Octopus card if you’re there for more than 2 weeks and think you’ll be travelling mainly on public trans. It’s refillable and SUPER easy to use. There’re are buses, the subway (called the MTR), streetcars, shuttles and private vans that can take you everywhere you need to go.

Carry your own stash of tissues/toilet paper. TRUST ME, you will need it. Many washrooms are not up to North American standards, and lack toilet paper. I can GUARANTEE you if you go to Lantau Island to see the big buddha, you WILL need your own TP. I’d suggest going only to bathrooms in malls and classy restaurants if you can’t handle the back alley “water closets”. Oh yeah, and many toilets have squat seats.

Handy small packs of tissues can be easily bought at pharmacies everywhere. Watson’s is a good, ubiquitous chain.

As for food, the varieties of cuisine is surprisingly diverse. You can get pretty much any ethnic cuisine you can think of in HK.

Food can also be cheap, too. There are a few “chinese fast food” chains that serve decent hot meals at a pittance. Most cafes have great happy hour meals, you can get a full meal (including a drink) for $4-5 in most cafes.

In terms of street food, I don’t know how brave you are, but some of the best snacks I’ve had were off the street. I have never gotten sick from street food before, but use your own judgement.

Well, you’ve got info about most of the good places already. I’d just advise you to go to Macao for a short trip. Sandz casino as a live band that plays from 07:30. I just loved them … no requirement to play at the casion to here their music.
